You Can Do Better

“You can do better.”

Those four words, often condescending in nature, or a feigned reassurance in tone, are what come to pass during my relationships–past and present–and after them.

“You can do better.” When you vocalize dissatisfaction and frustration to your girlfriends about your lazy ass boyfriend who smokes too much weed, and doesn’t have a job — insisting on some hippy bullshit about “living off the land” and getting by “from the kindness of people” whilst “living without money” while I enable the whole damn thing like a fucking idiot.

“You can do better.” When I tell myself the “Perfect” guy who did all the right things in the superficial, external way, fell flat on the internal hard shit (and maybe I did too).

“You can do better.” When you dump your ex, a perverted piece of shit who never goes down on you, who is pretty much Every Dude.

“You can do better.” When the playboy keeps on playing, and doesn’t realize what’s in front of him. A fucking good catch.

“You can do better.” When some right-winged evangelical fuck face tells you to get a new man who can support you while you work hard staying home to push out babies like it was my god given purpose in life, and nothing else; putting the old generation to shame and rest in their grave while my feminist laurels rise like the hackles on a tiger’s back. When she’s never even MET my man and judges him by the socio-economical status he’s been dealt with, as many in the working class, and “working poor” do. Though, by my standards, he’s right where I was in 2007, when living expenses weren’t nearly as high and we were on the brink of the bubble and the collapse. Read: RECESSION (and we’re still in it).

You Can Do Better

It’s that shitastic condescending phrase that makes you think “why would I need your approval, anyway!?”

It’s that Go, Go, Go, Do, Do, Do attitude of the individual.

Yes, you CAN do better.

By minding your own fucking business and living the best life you can. By quitting your go-nowhere job and deciding to work for yourself – making your future and your finances in your control. You can call the shots.

You can do better when you ignore all the naysayers and live your life just the way you want to. Not how other people tell you to.

You can do better when the fine art of not giving a fuck is mastered.
